Soy Positively Affects Markers for Metabolic Syndrome - New Data Presented at 5th International Conference Soy & Health 2008 , Ghent, Belgium - June 2 and 3, 2008

The metabolic syndrome is a clustering of metabolic abnormalities such as visceral adiposity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and insulin resistance that occurs in individuals with impaired insulin sensitivity. Genetic, metabolic and environmental factors, including diet, are thought to play a major role in the etiology of this syndrome.

Earlier studies have reported that soy consumption can reduce the development of metabolic syndrome in rats. At the Soy & Health Conference in Ghent, Belgium, on June 2-3 data will be presented which describe therapeutic effects of soy consumption on the insulin resistance and markers of the cardiovascular risk factors in postmenopausal women with the metabolic syndrome. Inflammatory markers and markers of the oxidative stress were also reduced in these patients following soy inclusion in their diets.

This study will be presented by Dr. Leila Azadbakht, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, Isfahan, Iran. The study was performed in collaboration with Prof. Walter C. Willett of Harvard School of Public Health, U.S.A..

This 5th International Conference Soy & Health 2008 will host participants from industry, health care professionals, government and information services. Leading soyfood producers and soy ingredient and supplement manufacturers will show the newest products and applications.

The simultaneously running 1st International Symposium Soy & Strategic Marketing brings a program for soyfood, soy ingredient, and food industry management, marketing and product developers.
